Alex DaSilva, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biologic & Materials Sciences, University of Michigan School of Dentistry (UMSD). Dr. DaSilva is a board-certified orofacial pain specialist who received his Doctorate in Medical Science degree in Oral Biology with clinical training in Orofacial Pain at Harvard University. This work was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship on Migraine Neuroimaging at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also worked at the Psychiatric Department at Harvard University/McLean Hospital, where he investigated brain neuroplasticity in trigeminal neuropathic pain patients. Dr. DaSilva is the UMSD Director of Learning Health Systems and Director of the HOPE (Headache & Orofacial Pain Effort) Lab, a multidisciplinary collaborative effort to investigate the brain as a research and therapeutic target for pain. With his colleagues at the HOPE Lab, he has developed novel technologies for pain research, treatment, and education using multimodal neuroimaging (PET, fMRI, fNIRS, and EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation, mobile technology, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and augmented/virtual reality (AV/VR). Since his arrival at UMSD, he has led multiple clinical translational studies funded by different National Institute of Health branches (e.g., NINDS, NIDCR, and NCCIH). He has served as a scientific reviewer for NIH, Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Defense. His publications have received broad media coverage by national and international venues, including Discovery Channel, San Francisco Chronicle, Scientific American Mind, and others.
